Introduction
The moon landing, otherwise know as the Apollo 11 mission, is an event that will be remembered forever. The Apollo 11 mission was a success, and Neil Armstrong and Eldwin "Buzz" Aldrin were the first men to step foot on the moon. The Apollo 11 landing on the moon changed American society.
BACKGROUND
Before the moon landing, competition between America and the Soviet Union in the Cold War was brutal. The Soviet’s had sent their first man into outer space, only furthering the competition between both nations. President John F. Kennedy made it a mission to land American men on the moon in the pursuit to win this “Space Race.” Many people doubted whether or not this daunting task was possible for America. The moon landing was a turning point because it changed Americans’ mindsets and what they thought was possible. During the 1950s and 1960s the Soviet Union dominated in the Space Race and kept setting new milestones, while America struggled to keep up. The moon landing proved to the Soviet Union and other countries that America was bigger competition than everyone thought. Lastly, this was a turning point because it led to many advances in technologies that are still used today.
THESIS
The Moon Landing on July 20, 1969 was the turning point for Americans; it was the time where America was thought of as real competition in the Cold War, technology advanced, and mindsets of Americans changed.
