Moon Landing: Process Paper
The turning point that I chose as the theme of my History Day project is the Apollo 11 mission moon landing that happened in 1969. This was a major turning point in American history because it changed American society: mindsets of Americans changed, technology of America changed, and America became a threat in the Space Race.
I chose this theme because I’d always thought that the moon landing was an intriguing event, and after I watched a speech revealing how important the moon landing was, I decided that this would be a good topic to make my project about. The moon landing was also an easier subject to research about because there is so much information and conspiracies regarding what happened with the Apollo 11 mission. The final reason why chose this topic for my project is because I still think it is crazy that humans were able to step foot on the moon; it is truly an astonishing thing to accomplish.
I conducted my project by first doing basic research. I got an idea of how the moon landing was a turning point, and after I learned the basics, I furthered my research. I looked for videos, pictures, articles, and interviews that could be used as evidence to prove that the moon landing was a turning point in American history. After research, I wrote answered questions on worksheets in class that eventually helped me when I put the actual website together. On Weebly (the website builder), I was able to organize my information and display it with pictures and videos.
The moon landing was a turning point in America and if we had not made the effort to land on the moon, many things would be different from the way they are today. If Americans hadn’t landed on the moon, then we would probably still think of it as an almost impossible task for our country. If we hadn’t created new technology for the use of astronauts during the moon landing, then we would not have most of the technology that we have today. If it weren’t for the moon landing, the Soviet Union would’ve probably been the first country to land a human on the moon, and they would’ve won the Space Race. The moon landing has affected not only the people of that time in the 1960s and 1970s, but it has left a long-term impact on our country even today. Had we not landed on the moon, life could possibly be quite similar to the way it was in the 1960s. The moon landing was an important event that changed history and will be forever remembered.
